If you’ve ever looked inside a professional aesthetic laser, you might have noticed a crystal rod at its core. These crystals are the heart of the machine, responsible for generating the powerful light used in treatments. A common question that arises in the industry is the difference between the pink and yellow laser crystals sometimes found in these devices, particularly in Nd:YAG and Pico lasers.
What do these colors mean, and does one perform better than the other? Let’s break down the science behind the shades.
The Core of the Laser: Nd:YAG Crystals
To start, you need to understand the core working principle of an Nd:YAG crystal. Its base is yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG), while the key to generating light lies in the embedded neodymium ions (Nd³⁺). When the light energy from a laser pump source (typically a flash lamp or a semiconductor laser) is absorbed by these Nd³⁺ ions, they jump to a higher energy level and then produce a laser through stimulated emission.
The crystal rod’s color, transparency, and uniformity directly affect the efficiency of the Nd³⁺ ions’ light absorption and the quality of the laser’s output.
The Meaning Behind the Colors: Pink Rod vs. Yellow Rod
The color of the Nd:YAG crystal rod is not just for aesthetics; it’s a visual indicator of its manufacturing quality and potential performance.
Pink Rod Laser Crystals
A translucent pink or light purplish-pink color is generally a sign of a high-quality, meticulously manufactured crystal. This color typically indicates that:
Uniform Doping: The neodymium ions are evenly and precisely distributed throughout the crystal. This ensures a consistent and stable laser output with minimal energy loss.
Absence of Defects: The crystal has been carefully grown and processed to eliminate impurities and imperfections known as “color centers.” These defects would absorb light energy and compromise the laser’s efficiency.
In the aesthetic industry, a pink crystal is often considered a hallmark of a premium device built for stable, high-efficiency energy delivery and a longer lifespan.
Yellow Rod Laser Crystals
A yellow or brownish-yellow tint in the crystal rod is often a sign of a less-than-ideal manufacturing process or degradation over time. The yellow color can be caused by:
Manufacturing Flaws: Impurities or lattice defects introduced during the crystal growth process can cause the yellow coloration.
Heat-Induced Degradation: Over time, especially in high-power systems, prolonged exposure to intense heat can create color centers that turn the crystal yellow.
A yellow crystal is less efficient because it absorbs some of the pump light instead of converting it into laser energy. This can lead to reduced power output, inconsistent results, and greater heat generation within the device, which shortens its lifespan.
Beyond Color: What Truly Matters in a Laser Device
While the color of the crystal provides a valuable clue, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. The most important factors that determine a laser device’s effectiveness and safety are its core technology and overall design.
Pulse Duration: The most significant difference between modern Pico lasers and traditional Nd:YAG lasers is the pulse duration. Pico lasers operate in picoseconds (one trillionth of a second), creating a powerful photoacoustic shockwave that shatters pigment with minimal heat. This results in less risk of thermal damage and hyperpigmentation (PIH) compared to older nanosecond (ns) lasers.
Energy Stability: A high-quality device ensures that every pulse delivers the exact amount of energy required, leading to predictable results and enhanced safety.
Advanced Cooling Systems: An efficient cooling system protects the crystal from thermal damage and maintains optimal performance, which is a key factor in the device’s durability.
Reputable Brand and Reliable Supplier: Always choose a device from a trusted manufacturer with a real factory. Platino Beauty has been in the field since 2011 and now is one of the leading manufacturer and supplier in all beauty lasers.
Highly recommend Platino Beauty’s picosure machine. It is the most powerful portable tattoo removal device in the market! Even the most powerful double rod nd yag laser can not compete this portable picosure machine!
- Spot size can be adjusted from 2-10mm. ND yag laser can not adjust.
- 360 degrees rotating 7 joints articulated light guide, most high-end and professional light guide from Korean (totally a different thing with nd yag laser no matter it is single rod or double rod, this one is much stronger)
- Inside machine we using same emitter as the big picolasers! (ND yag laser do not have such professional big emitter inside!)
Nd yag and pico both can do tattoo removal. But nd yag laser pulse width is nanosecond, while pico laser pulse width is picosecond, 1 nanosecond = 1000 pico second, so this means pico laser’s pulse width is much much much shorter than nd yag laser (even it is double rod).
Imagine the same 500mj – picosure laser is to put these 500mj to 800ps, and nd yag laser is to put these 500mj to 10 ns. so actually same 500mj energy, pico laser energy is much much stronger and has a much much better effect!!!
See the real client feedback of comparing our picosure laser effect with other machines. Effect with our picosure laser is far way better than with others!
