Comparison of Diode Laser Hair Removal Machine Cooling Systems

In Diode Laser Hair Removal machines, the efficiency of the cooling system for the Diode laser stack (emitter) is the single most critical factor determining the diode laser machine’s stability, handle lifespan, and clinical consistency. The laser diodes generate immense heat, and failure to dissipate this heat quickly leads to wavelength drift, power degradation, and eventually, burnt of the expensive diode bars.

There are three primary cooling methods available on the market:

  • Fans+ Radiators – The basic system
  • TEC Cooler – The middle system
  • The compressor – The most high-end system

1. Fan

How it works?

1 – When diode laser hair removal machine working, the handle will emit laser light and generate very high temperature in the laser stack.

2- Water will circulate to laser stack and take away the heat from the stack and meanwhile the water becomes warm.

3- The heated water flows to radiator with fans blowing to reduce the temperature.

4- The cooled water flows back to the water tank and again be pumped to the laser stack.

Under continuously working, the water temperature will be gradually go higher because fan and radiator do not have enough time to really cool down the water. The warm water back to tank and be pumped to laser stack again, it will no longer to take away stack heat efficiently. This will greatly affect diode laser’s  output energy and accelerating laser stack aging and lead to burn. 

Fan + Radiator, such cooling system is the cheapest and most basic. It only suitable for low-power devices or those not requiring high-frequency, continuous operation. For the machine with handle power over 800W, we do not suggest this way. But actually in market, to get a cheaper price, over half diode laser machines are still using this cooling way.

2. TEC Cooler

how it works:

  • The working principle of TEC (Thermoelectric Cooler) is based on the Peltier Effect, which uses electrical energy to create a temperature differential.
  • A TEC module has two sides. One side actively absorbs heat at its junctions (the cold side), and then transfers the absorbed heat to the opposite side (the hot side).
  • The side that absorbs heat sees a temperature decrease and is used to cool the circulating water, the laser stack, or the handpiece tip.
  • The side that releases heat experiences a temperature increase, and this heat must be dissipated into the environment with the aid of auxiliary fans and radiators.

TEC Cooler is widely used in many middle to high-end diode laser machines. Its effect is better than just fan and radiator. It suitable for most of the generally seen conditions, but not suitable if the handle power is over 1500W.

3. Compressor

Working Principle

This is an active refrigeration system that uses the vapor-compression cycle, exactly same with the ones used in refrigerators and air conditioners – which can continously cool the water and make the temperature lower than the room temperature!

Compressor has the Strongest Cooling Capacity. Can always keep water 18 to 20 degrees. Which ensures the diode stack operates at its optimal low temperature, significantly extending the life of the laser bars. It can also guarantees energy output remains stable and consistent during high-power, long-duration continuous operation (high duty cycle).

Compressor is considered to be the most high-end cooling system for diode laser machines, especially for the high power, high duty cycle machines. But only very few machines using compressor because its high cost.
